| 1824 premiere of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 "Choral" in the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna; in 2002, the original score of the symphony, kept in the Berlin Library, was added to the United Nations World Heritage List, the first musical score so honoured.
1833 Johannes Brahms born - German composer and pianist (d.1897); his contribution and craftsmanship have been admired by figures as diverse as Arnold Schoenberg and Sir Edward Elgar. The diligent, highly constructed nature of Brahms's works was a starting point and an inspiration for a generation of composers.
1840 Peter Tchaikovsky born - Russian composer (d.1893); he forged a personal but unmistakably Russian style in symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets, chamber music, and became the first full-time professional Russian composer.
