Birthdays:
1660 Alessandro Scarlatti born - Italian composer of operas (some 115!) and religious works (d.1725); the father of two other composers, Domenico Scarlatti and Pietro Filippo Scarlatti. 1752 Ludwig August Lebrun baptized - German oboist and composer (d.1790); married the soprano Franziska Danzi, the sister of Franz Danzi, one of the most outstanding and well-known singers of the time. 1810 Hans Christian Lumbye born - Danish composer of light dance music (d.1874). 1843 Carl Michael Ziehrer born - Austrian composer (d.1922); one of the fiercest rivals of the Strauss family; most notably Johann Strauss Jr and Eduard Strauss. 1936 premiere of Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" in Moscow; commissioned by the Central Children's Theatre, the piece for narrator and orchestra was completed in just four days. 1947 Philippe Herreweghe born - Belgian conductor and chorus master (66 years old); founded the Collegium Vocale Gent in 1970 and in 1977 La Chapelle Royale in Paris. 1956 premiere of Ralph Vaughan Williams's Symphony No. 8 in Manchester by the Halle Orchestra led by Sir John Barbirolli.
