1894 premiere of Jules Massenet's Thaïs in Paris; set in Egypt during Byzantine rule, where a Cenobite monk, Athanaël, attempts to convert Thaïs, an Alexandrian courtesan and devotee of Venus, to Christianity; the opera is often described as bearing a sort of "religious eroticism." 1920 John Addison born - English composer best known for film scores (d.1998). 1934 Sir Roger Norrington - English conductor (79 years old); founded the Schütz Choir in 1962. 1953 Claus Peter Flor - German conductor (60 years old).

1:00 METROPOLITAN OPERA
The 2012-13 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with a live broadcast of Francesca da Rimini. Riccardo Zandonai’s opera, based on an episode from Dante’s Inferno, has its first company performances since 1986 this season. Soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek stars as the beautiful noblewoman Francesca; tenor Marcello Giordani is Paolo, the man she loves at first sight; baritone Mark Delavan is Paolo’s brother Gianciotto, to whom Francesca is unhappily married; tenor Robert Brubaker is the jealous Malatestino; and Marco Armiliato conducts his first Met performances of the opera, which is presented in Piero Faggioni’s grand 1984 production. The performance will also be transmitted worldwide as part of The Met: Live in HD series, which now reaches more than 1,900 movie theaters in 64 countries.
The intermissions will include backstage interviews led by Live in HD host soprano Sondra Radvanovsky and the popular Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera Quiz. The guest artist on the quiz will be tenor Piotr Beczala.
