Sunday March 4
12:00am AMERICA’S MUSIC FESTIVALS with Orli Shaham: Canandaigua Lake Music Festival - Along the banks of a Finger Lake in New York state, musicians come together to make music in a place the Seneca Indians named their “Chosen Spot.” Canandaigua is home to forested hills, a wealth of wetlands, a beautiful lake and thanks to two classical musicians turned artistic directors. The town is also home to the thriving Canandaigua Lake Music Festival. The festival celebrates its seventh year in 2011 by exploring the interplay between folk music, story-telling traditions and classical music. The festival celebrates a variety of composers influenced by folk traditions and multicultural musical tastes, including masters such as Dvorak and Ravel. Cellist Mike Block and Clarinetist Moran Katz are featured, as well as the renowned pianist and composer, Lowell Liebermann. The theme of storytelling continues with author David Rakoff, who hosts a program that brings the music of Beethoven and Janácek together with a tale by Tolstoy. The most interesting story of the festival itself is the Canandaigua Lake Music Festival’s commitment to demystifying classical music for audiences – the festival includes family performances, a master class open to the public and a series of concerts entitled “Classical Blue Jeans,” which allows artists and audiences to meet, dine together and listen to some incredible pieces of classical music.
