1:00 THE METROPOLITAN OPERA
The 2010-2011 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, conducted by Met Music Director James Levine and starring Alan Held and Waltraud Meier. Levine is a great champion of Berg’s expressionistic opera, in which society drives a soldier to murder. The broadcast will be Levine’s 43rd time conducting the opera at the Met, where he has led every performance of the work since 1974.
Held made his Met debut in 1989 and has gone on to sing nearly 200 performances with the company. Meier has earned an international reputation as a great singing actress and she has sung Marie—the woman whose infidelity fuels Wozzeck’s violent rage—in leading European opera houses. This season marks her first performances in Wozzeck at the Met. As Wozzeck’s tormentors, Stuart Skelton makes his Met debut as the Drum Major, opposite Gerhard Siegel as the Captain and Walter Fink as the Doctor.
