1:00 THE METROPOLITAN OPERA
This week the 2010-2011 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season offers the network broadcast premiere of a classic American masterpiece, Nixon in China, conducted by the opera’s composer, John Adams. James Maddalena, who has portrayed Nixon to great acclaim since the opera’s premiere in 1987, sings the title role and, with this production, makes his Met debut. 
Adams, whose Doctor Atomic had its Met premiere in 2008, makes his house debut as conductor with Nixon in China. In addition to Maddalena, the cast includes Janis Kelly in her Met debut as Pat Nixon; Kathleen Kim as Chiang Ch’ing (Madame Mao); Robert Brubaker as Mao Tse-tung; Russell Braun as Chou En-lai; and Richard Paul Fink as Henry Kissinger.
The intermissions will include live Backstage Interviews with some of the stars of Nixon in China conducted by Thomas Hampson as well as the popular Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera Quiz, hosted by baritone Mariusz Kwiecien who is currently appearing at the Met in Don Pasquale.
