The 2010-2011 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with a special archival broadcast of Bedřich Smetana’s charming opera, The Bartered Bride. The performance, conducted by James Levine, was originally broadcast live on
December 2, 1978
The performance stars Teresa Stratas as Mařenka, the peasant’s daughter who is promised to one man but loves another; Nicolai Gedda is Jeník, the stranger she loves; Jon Vickers is the stuttering Vašek, her wealthy, but charmless fiancé; and Martti Talvela is Kecal, the village marriage broker.
During the first intermission we will hear from Met Music Director James Levine about The Bartered Bride and Smetana’s music. During the second intermission we will learn about Maestro Levine's work with the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program.
