11:00 CIM’S OFFBEAT with Merry Peckham - Classical musicians are turning up in new settings and bringing a new approach to presenting their music. Students and faculty at CIM take classical music into schools, retirement centers and hospitals. Concerts are being presented all over town, in not so traditional settings.  Annie Fullard, violinist with the Cavani String Quartet and a tremendous supporter of outreach in all forms, and Erica Ward, a CIM student violinist, are both active making sure that classical music is there to be enjoyed by all.

Peter Tchaikovsky: The Queen of Spades (1890)
Renowned conductor Seiji Ozawa, who returns to the Met this season after an absence of more than 15 years, leads Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades. Tenor Ben Heppner sings the role of the obsessive gambler Ghermann, and soprano Maria Guleghina portrays Lisa, the innocent woman drawn into Ghermann’s descent into madness. The cast also includes mezzo-soprano Felicity Palmer as the Countess, who holds the secret of cards sought by Ghermann, mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk as Lisa’s friend and confidante Pauline, baritone Mark Delavan as Count Tomsky, and baritone Vladimir Stoyanov as the spurned Prince Yeletsky.
Intermission content will include the beloved Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera Quiz hosted by bass-baritone Eric Owens, who recently made his company debut as General Leslie Groves in Doctor Atomic, and who will be heard as Sarastro in upcoming performances of the Met’s special holiday presentation of Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Panelists on the Quiz will include George Preston, Ken Benson, and Suzanne Martinucci.
