High School Instrumental and Vocal All Stars of Northeast
Ohio for 2010

WCLV and the Ohio Music Education Association
are pleased to salute the following high school
students in Districts IV and VII who have been
recognized for excellence in music.  Each student
receives a certificate and is acknowledged in on-air
salutes over WCLV, sponsored by Berea City
Schools, who consistently rank among the tops
in the nation for music education, continuing to
help students achieve dreams they never thought possible. 

 

Join WCLV and the Ohio Music Education Association in congratulating this year’s High School Instrumental and Vocal All Stars of Northeast Ohio.

Austin Haynesworth, violin, a senior at Beachwood High School.  Austin’s instructors are Lisa Goldman and Noel Bliss.

Audrey Fagan, soprano.  Audrey is a Senior at Trinity High School where Dr. Thomas M. Scott is the vocal instructor.

Also a Senior at Trinity High School, Gabe Fischer, baritone.  Dr. Thomas M. Scott is his instructor.

Matt King plays Alto Saxophone.  He is a Senior at Perry High School and Brad Hruska is his instructor.

Jessica Takacs is a Junior at Mentor High School where she plays cello.  Jessica 
received a Superior Rating at a 2010 OMEA adjudicated event.  Beth Klayman is 
Mentor’s Orchestra Director.  

Jacob Fail, pianist and vocalist.  A Senior at Bay High School, Jacob’s  instructor 
is Devon T. Gess.

Kate Reading, harpist from Lakewood High School.  A Sophomore, Kate was a member of this year’s OMEA All State Orchestra.  Elizabeth Hankins is her instructor.

Jill Germana, bass clarinetist.  Jill is a Senior at Padua Franciscan High School, where her instructor is Kathy DeBlasi.

Brielle Giomini, flute.  Brielle is also a Senior at Padua Franciscan.  Katherine DeBlasi is her instructor.

Liz Daily, oboe, earned a Superior Rating.  A Junior at Riverside High School in Painesville, Liz’s instructor is David Schwartz.

Erika Kunath is a Senior at Midview High School.  A soprano, Erika was a member of the OMEA All State Choir this year.  Lisa Manning is her instructor.

Brian Simmons, earned a Superior Rating for French Horn performance.  Brian is a Junior, and his instructor at Riverside High School is David Schwartz.

Allison Ragland is a Senior at Bedford High School. She plays flute and piccolo, and her instructors are Shawn Nichols and Jennifer Shalf.

Also a Senior at Bedford, James MacIntyre is a vocalist.  His instructor is Gary Kaplan.

Oboist Kevin Vogel is a Senior at St. Edward High School where Robert Burns is the instructor.

Becky Zucker, a Junior at Orange High School earned a Superior rating for snare drum performance.  Her instructor is Dr. Craig Kepner.

Baritone, Craig Juricka is a Junior at Mentor High School where Terry DiFranco Heischman is the vocal instructor.  Craig earned a Superior rating for vocal
performance. 

 Jeremy Childers earned a Superior Rating for Trumpet performance. Jeremy is a Junior at Madison High School where Kristy May is his instructor.

 Ariana Graybe, a junior at Cleveland Heights High School, was chosen to sing in the Soprano section of OMEA’s All State Choir.  Craig McGaughey is Arianna’s instructor.

Another All State Choir member from Cleveland Heights High School is bass Jaired Birks.  Jaired is also a Junior.

Violinist Joshua Clark, a Junior at Mentor High School, received a superior rating at an OMEA-adjudicated event. Beth Klayman is Joshua’s instructor.

Nathan Huntsberger also received a superior rating – his for trombone performance.  Nathan is a Junior at West Geauga High School.  Frank Cosenza is his instructor.

Tenor Frank Blackman was a member of the OMEA All State Choir.  Frank is a Senior at Lakewood High School.  Dr. Lisa Hanson is the Choir Director there.

Kristina Bodnar receives special recognition for excellence as both a pianist and vocalist.  Sister Mary Seton Schlather is her director at Regina High School.  Kristina is a Senior.

Stephanie Popik, a Senior at Shaker Heights High School was a member of the OMEA All State Choir’s soprano section.  Dr. Robert Schneider is her instructor.

Bass Justin Caithaml is a Senior at Midview High School. Justin was a member of this year’s OMEA All State Choir.  Lisa Manning is Jason’s choral director at Midview.

Ariel Paynter Senior at Regina High School received a Superior Rating for vocal performance.  Sister Mary Seton Schlather is Ariel’s instructor.

Jonathan Griffin, Senior at Bedford High School, received his Superior Rating for his performance in Alto Saxophone.  Shawn Nichols and Jennifer Shalf are instrumental instructors at Bedford High.

Jeffrey Petro, a Junior at Wellington High School has received special recognition for excellence in music.  Jeffrey plays trumpet, and Antoinette Novotny is his instructor.

Soprano Erin Stevens has received special recognition for vocal excellence.  Erin is a Senior at Bay High School.  Devon T. Gess is her instructor.

Violinist Sevy Harris has received special recognition for performance excellence.  Sevy is a Senior at Beachwood High School where Lisa Goldman and Noel Bliss are music instructors.

Danica Kirk received a Superior Rating for her flute performance at an OMEA adjudicated event.  Danica is a Senior at Madison High School.  Kristy May is her instructor.

Alto Courtney Burton, a Senior at Cleveland Heights High School, received at Superior Rating for vocal performance.  Her director is Craig McGaughey.

Cleveland Heights High School Junior Julia Barcus, Soprano, also received a Superior Rating this year under the guidance of Craig McGaughey. 

Two bassists from Lakewood High School were selected to participate in the OMEA All State Orchestra -  Kyle Kubovcik, a Senior and Al Rodriquez, a Junior.  Elizabeth Hankins is the orchestra director at Lakewood.

Soprano Leah Stenger received a Superior Rating for vocal performance.  Leah is a Junior at Mentor High School where Terry DiFranco Herschman is her instructor.

A Senior at Madison High School, Michael Socosky received two Superior Ratings this year – one for piano and the other for trumpet performance. Michael’s instructor is Kristy May.

Sonya Bangalore, a Senior at Beachwood High School, received a Superior Rating for violin performance.  Lisa Goldman and Noel Bliss are Sonya’s instructors. 

Bass Daniel Carder received a Superior Rating for vocal performance.  Daniel is a Junior at Cleveland Heights High School where Craig McGaughey is his director.

Here’s one of the few percussionists who achieved a Superior Rating this year.  Megan Banks, a Senior at Euclid High School plays snare drum.  Her instructors are Diane Tizzano and Heather Bishop.

John Steimle Trinity High School Senior received a Superior Rating for vocal performance.  John is a tenor, and his instructor is Dr. Thomas M. Scott.

Lakewood High School Senior Greg Culley has received special recognition for musical excellence.  Greg plays violin under the direction of Elizabeth Hankins.

Also a Senior from Lakewood High School, alto Mary Beth Donahoe (Don ah ho) was chosen to be a member of OMEA’s All State Choir.  Beth’s director is Dr. Lisa Hanson.

Ramsey Sabbagh (Sah bah), a Senior at Orange High School, received an OMEA Superior Rating for piano performance.  Ramsey’s instructor is Miss Rebecca Ellsworth.

Tenor Brian Barron, a Junior at Cleveland Heights High School, received a Superior Rating for vocal performance.  Craig McGaughey is Brian’s instructor.

Monika Cepulis a vocalist and Senior at Beaumong School has receieved special recognition for music excellence.  Dr. Lisa Litteral is Monika’s instructor.

Jenna Siebert received a OMEA Superior Rating for piano performance.  Jenna is a Junior at Perry High School where Brad Hruska is the director.

Tenor Jack Lentz, a Junior at Cleveland Heights High School was named a member of the OMEA All State Choir.  Craig McGughey is Jack’s director.

From Beachwood High School, Senior Emi Hitomi received a Superior Rating for violin performance.  Lisa Goldmand and Noel Bliss are the music instructors at Beachwood.

Sarah Kurtz, Trinity High School Junior, received a Superior Rating for vocal performance.  Sarah is a mezz-soprano, and Dr. Thomas M. Scott is her instructor.

Cellist Aubrey Kennedy has received special recognition for excellence in music.  Aubrey is a Senior at Lakewood High School where Elizabeth Hankins is the Orchestra director.

Another Senior at Lakewood High School, soprano Katie Staskus, was selected to participate in the OMEA All State Choir.  Dr. Lisa Hanson is the choral director at Lakewood.

William Hairston, a Senior at Bedford High School, has received special recognition for excellence in vocal performance.  Gary Kaplan is William’s instructor.

Trombonist Mark Homyak, a Senior at St. Edward High School, has received special recognition for instrumental performance.  His director is Robert Burns.

Jacob Poiner, a Senior at Wellington High School where Anotoinette Novotny is the director.  Jacob is the only Marimba player in this year’s group of All Stars.

Bryan Powell, trumpet, has received special recognition for excellence in music.  Bryan is a Senior at Perry High School where Brad Hruska is the director.

Teresa Ianni, a Senior at Beaumont School, has received special recognition for vocal performance.  Teresa’s director is Dr. Lisa Litteral.

Baritones Ben Flox and Christopher Myrick, Jr., have both received OMEA Superior Ratings for vocal performance.  The are Seniors at Cleveland Heights High School where Craig McGaughey is the choral director.

Another Cleveland Heights High School Senior and Bariton, Seth Ungemach, was invited to be a member of OMEA’s 2010 All State Choir.

Alto, Becca James received a Superior Rating for vocal performance at an OMEA Solo and Ensemble event.  Becca is a Senior at Avon Lake High School where William Zurkey is the instructor. 

Heather Rice who plays flute at Madison High School received special recognition for excellence in instrumental performance.  Heather is a Senior, and her instructor is Kristy May.

Soprano Amber Jardin received a Superior Rating at an OMEA adjudicated event.  Amber is a Junior at Trinity High School where Dr. Thomas M. Scott is her instructor.

Soprano Carmen Rush, a Senior at Bay High School, has received special recognition for excellence in vocal performance.  Devon T. Gess is her instructor.

TJ Fallon, a Junior at Avon Lake High School was a member of the OMEA All State Choir tenor section.  William Zurkey is his instructor.

Carter Strong, violist, was invited to be a member of the OMEA All State Orchestra.  Carter is a Junior at Lakewood High School.  Elizabeth Hankins is the Orchestra director there. 

Bass, Andrew Rosner, a Senior at Trinity High School, received an OMEA Superior Rating for vocal performance.  Dr. Thomas M. Scott is Andrew’s instructor.

Masami Matsuyama, a violinist at Senior at Beachwood High School, has received special recognition for instrumental performance.  Her instructors are Lisa Goldman and Noel Bliss.

Two altos from Avon Lake High School participated in OMEA’s 2010 All State Choir.  Janell Brandley and Kristin Butler are both Seniors at Avon Lake.  William Zurkey is the instructor.

Flautist Erica Dosen has received special recognition for excellence in instrumental performance.  Erica is a Senior at Padua Franciscan High School where Ms. Kathy DeBlasi is her instructor.

Erin Carney, a Senior at Lakewood High School, was invited to be a part of the soprano section in this year’s OMEA All State Choir.  Dr. Lis Hanson is the choral director at Lakewood.

Avon Lake High School had several students who were invited to participate in OMEA’s 2010 All State Choir.  Two of those students are both Seniors and sopranos.  They are Annalise Dzwonczyk  and Marta Lukasevic. William Zurkey is their instructor at Avon Lake.

Randy Mocarski, who plays trumpet at Perry High School, has received special recognition for excellence in instrumental performance.  Randy is a Senior, and his instructor is Brad Hruska.

Becca Hord, a Senior at Madison High School, has received an OMEA Superior Rating for vocal performance.  Nicole Groah is Becca’s director.

Tenor Mista Craig, a Junior at Cleveland Heights High School, also earned a Superior Rating for vocal performance.  Craig McGaughey is the director at Cleveland Heights High.

Katie Piszczak a Senior at Trinity High School sang soprano in the 2010 OMEA All State Chamber Choir.

Richard Moss, a baritone and Junior at Cleveland Heights High School, received a Superior Rating for vocal performance.  Craig McGaughey is the choral director at Cleveland Heights High School.

Trumpeter Derek Patterson has received special recognition for excellence in instrumental performance.  Derek is a Senior at Perry High School, where Brad Hruska is the director.

Natalie Rosmarin, a Junior at Avon Lake High School was invited to participate in the Soprano section of OMEA’s All State Choir.

Another soprano and Junior at Avon Lake, Katie Rudnick, sang in this year’s OMEA All State Choir.  William Zurkey is the director at Avon Lake High School.

Julia Zimmerman, a Junior at Lakewood High School, and the only female double bassist in this year’s list of All Stars, has received special recognition for musical excellence.  Elizabeth Hankins is her instructor.

Tenor Billy Tayek is a Senior at Avon Lake High School, where William Zurkey is the director.  Billy received an OMEA Superior Rating for vocal performance.

Casey O’Rourke, bass, is also a Senior at Avon Lake and President of the choir.  He has received special recognition for musical excellence.

Trumpeter Steve Baznik has received special recognition for excellence in instrumental performance.  Steve is a Senior at Padua Franciscan High School, where Mrs. Kathy DeBlasi  is the director.

Jane Lodwick, a Senior at Beaumont School, has received special recognition for excellence in vocal performance.  Dr. Lisa Litteral is Jane’s instructor.

Mary Clare Meyer, a Junior at Padua Franciscan High School has received special recognition for excellence in vocal performance.  Ms. Tamara Plasterer is Mary Clare’s instructor.

Two violinists from Lakewood High School have received special recognition for musical excellence – Abby Wimbiscus, a Junior, and Alex Neidert, a Senior.  Elizabeth Hankins is their director.

Also from Lakewood High School, Oboist Jon Snyder, was invited play in the National Honors High School Orchestra in February of this year. 

Amelia Cegielski a Perry High School Junior, received an OMEA Superior Rating for her performance on piccolo.  Brad Hruska is Amelia’s instructor.

Jake Hastings, is a Senior at Avon Lake High School, where William Zurkey is the director.  Jake was asked to sing in the tenor section of the 2010 OMEA All State Choir.

Violinist Andy Peng, a Sophomore at Lakewood High School, was asked to participate in this year’s OMEA All State Orchestra.  Elizabeth Hankins in the Orchestra director at Lakewood.

CONGRATULATIONS to all our 2010 High School Instrumental and Vocal All Stars of Northeast Ohio! And kudos to their instructors and their schools for making music education a priority.
