2009 JUBILATION CHORAL  FESTIVAL SET

WCLV and co-sponsor The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, will cooperate in launching Jubilation, the second annual regional church choir festival culminating in the final rounds at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist on May 7 and 8, 2009.

Said WCLV President Robert Conrad, “This second annual Jubilation continues the mission of this festival to remind Cleveland and the surrounding areas of that beautiful and time-honored tradition of choral music in our houses of worship and to further heighten the standard of music in the 21st century.”

Says Music Director Greg Heislman from The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 2008 “Jubilation” winner and this year’s cosponsor, “The second Vatican Council stated emphatically that choirs must be diligently promoted.  With that, the Cathedral of St. John is honored to be a cosponsor of this second annual Jubilation Choir festival in the hope that church choirs in Northeastern Ohio take seriously the ecumenical mandate of the Council to further the cause of the choral art.”

The goal of this Festival is excellence in choral singing and diversity in styles.  The repertoire will include not only western classical music but also the tradition of gospel and other genres.  Choirs will be judged on their technical ability, their musicality and their work as an ensemble.

First prize will win a cash prize of $1,000 and receive a 2009 Jubilation trophy.  The five runners-up will win $500 and receive 2009 Jubilation plaques.  Invitations, with a full list of rules and repertoire will be mailed out to choirs in December 2008.

The judges for the final rounds are:

Ø      Dr. Betsy Burleigh, Professor; Coordinator of Choral and Vocal Studies; Director, University Chorale and University Chorus, Assistant Director Choruses, Cleveland Orchestra Chorus.

Ø      Dr. Joseph Martin, Famed Choral Director and Clinician, Director of Sacred Publications, Shawnee Press

Ø      Dr. Craig Jessop, Head of Music Department, Utah State University and Former Director, Mormon Tabernacle Choir

The preliminary rounds will be based on recorded submissions, and the deadline for receipt is March 18, 2009.  Entries on tape or CD should be sent to WCLV, 26501 Renaissance Parkway, Cleveland, Ohio 44128.  After preliminary judging, six (6) choirs will be chosen to go on to the final rounds.  Notification by March 25, 2009 will be made to those chosen choirs.  The six choirs will be asked to prepare a twenty minute program each, which will then be adjudicated by a panel of distinguished judges.

The final rounds will be broadcast live before an audience at The Cathedral at St. John Evangelist on Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8 at 8:00 p.m.  The host for the broadcasts will again be Lloyd Newell, the radio voice of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
