The Choir of St. John the Evangelist Wins First
WCLV/UCC Church Choir Challenge

Greg Heislman, Director of the Choir of St. John
the Evangelist, receiving the congratulations
of WCLV Senior Account Executive Elizabeth Stuart and
Rev. Curtis Ackley of the UCC. The St. John Choir
won First Place in the WCLV/UCC Jubilation Challenge.
Stuart created and developed the concept of Jubilation.
On Friday, May 9th, and Saturday, May 10th, the first Jubilation-WCLV/United
Church of Christ Church Choir Challenge took place at Pilgrim Congregational UCC
Church in Tremont. The broadcast was divided into two parts: three choirs on Friday,
three on Saturday. Winning the First Prize of $1000 and a trophy was the Choir of
St. John the Evangelist, Greg Heislman, director, and Christopher Toth, accompanist.
The other five finalists, which were not ranked, each received $500 and a commemorative
plaque. They were Epworth-Euclid United Methodist Church, Old Stone Church, The First
Church UCC Oberlin, the Federated Church of Chagrin Falls and Christ Presbyterian
Church Chancel Choir, Canton.
The two live broadcasts on WCLV were
hosted by a voice familiar to many
WCLV listeners: Lloyd Newell, announcer
for the national broadcasts of the
Mormon Tabernacle Choir, heard on
WCLV, Sundays at 8:30 PM.
The six finalist choirs were chosen from a field of 27 entrants.

The judges were:
WCLV's President Robert Conrad and Reverend Curtis Ackley, Assocation Minister for the Western Reserve Association of the UCC, stated, "The goal of this competition is excellence in choral singing and diversity in styles. The repertoire should include not only Western sacred classical music but also the tradition of gospel and other genres. Choirs will be judged on their expression, accuracy, technical ability, musicality and work as an ensemble. The repertoire choice is to be as broad as possible, drawing on music that would be expected to be performed in church. The programs should include music of contrasting styles, including at least one a capella piece, if possible."
