ENDURING LOVE

Darling,
I love you
from the length, breadth and depth
of my
arrhythmic, pace-maker charged,
ACE-inhibited, Beta-blocked,
Prolapsed, murmuring, valve-replaced,
catheterized, quad-bypassed, multi-stented,
functionally stunted,
enlarged, congestively failing,
anginally stressed heart.
You are my nitro.

SECOND PRIZE

Joseph Psarto
Westlake

A handwoven kilim handbag from Larchmere Oriental Rugs; gift certificate from Malley’s Chocolates; Telarc’s Breathe for Lovers CD

YEATS’ PIE

William
Butler Yeats
placed on his table two plates,
a slice of pie on each,
no cherry, not apple, but peach.

One plate was for Olivia now,
the other for Maude by and by.
But Olivia walked away and away
with a salty tear in her eye.

For Yeats was a dim-witted lover,
his heart in sad disarray.
He should have kept them apart,
one plate for night, the other for day.

THIRD PRIZE

Valentina Ranaldi-Adams
Fairlawn

Waterford Crystal Rosebud Vase from Ricky C. Tanno Jewelers;
gift certificate from Malley’s Chocolates; Telarc’s Breathe for Lovers CD

SHAKESPEARIAN VALENTINE

To be girl friend or be wife
That is the question.
Whether ‘tis nobler to receive flowers
Or to take arms against a sea of laundry?

FOURTH PRIZE

Jean Isabel
Hudson

Gift certificate from Malley’s Chocolates; Telarc’s Breathe for Lovers CD

WRITING ABOUT WRITING ABOUT LOVE

If everyday were Tuesday
(For that’s the day we met)
I’d write in spangled phrases
You never could forget.

If everyday were Tuesday,
Recycling through the week,
Discarding all my verbiage:
Each line would be unique.

If everyday were Tuesday
(The day you came my way)
The sparks of all my words would
Incinerate cliché.

FIFTH PRIZE

Robert Mayerovitch
Berea

Gift certificate from Malley’s Chocolates; Telarc’s Breathe for Lovers CD

A VALENTINE SONNET FOR MY WIFE LAURA

A rosy garland crowning my heart’s Queen -
A goblet filled to brim with rubied wine -
A clarion proclamation – Music’s sign -
These Valentines rejoice with passion keen.

Once more, my love, this day has come to pass,
Once more a time to celebrate anew,
Once more a chance for toasting, just we two,
With song, with picnicked feast, with crystal glass.

It’s right that with each quickly passing year,
It’s fine that with each celebration fleet,
It’s good that with each twinge of life’s retreat,
Still love finds laughter during each brief tear.

So dear belov’d, my wish for you is this:
That each new year come welcome as a kiss.

SIXTH PRIZE

Peter Manos

MY FUNNY VALENTIN E

Your nose is stubby,
Your body chubby,
Your feet are too big, and your butt’s too tubby.

Your laugh’s like a shriek,
Your muscles are weak.
Your eyes are myopic, and you’re kind of a geek.

Some nights you snore.
You’re sometimes a bore.
You leave the seat up, ‘till you make me real sore.

But I love you babe!
You’re all that I crave.
To me you’re so cute, I’ll be your love slave.

EIGHTH PRIZE

e. kaank
Cleveland

Gift certificate from Malley’s Chocolates; Telarc’s Breathe for Lovers CD

ORIGAMI

Because it’s such beautiful paper, love
- hand-pulled, textured with long fibers that make a pattern in the light -
we debated long before we made that first reluctant crease.
The next folds came easily, quick and confident,
then more involved with joy in the complexities.

Sometimes the edges refuse to meet, seams unfurl, corners buckle
- a difficult piece that won’t come true -
then I push it away, bored,
or you toss it, crumpled across the room
where it rolls under the sofa.

But we always fish it out again
blow off the dust and continue to fold
because it’s such beautiful paper, love.

NINTH PRIZE

Brenda Owens
Cleveland

Gift certificate from Malley’s Chocolates; Telarc’s Breathe for Lovers CD

PASSAGE

Walking with the dogs
In frosty mist,
And the pale rising light
Of a February morn
Stop.

Breathe the silence and exhale the breath
Curling out from parted lips, like milk in tea
A jet-trail of softly spo
ken promises
This is where I always find you
And let you be.

TENTH PRIZE

Joette McDonald
Vermilion

Gift certificate from Malley’s Chocolates; Telarc’s Breathe for Lovers CD

SEPARATION

“He’s gone to sing in the choir,”
she said,
“I know it’s much better this way,”
but her eyes were pools of loneliness,
You can see she’s beginning to shrivel,
to shrink.

It’s too hard to accompany his song,
you see:
her piano is here,
and he’s gone
to sing in the choir.
