WCLV'S SPUTNIK PARTY
On Thursday, October 4th, WCLV observed
the 50th anniversary of Sputnik, the
Russian satellite that was the first man-
made object to circle the earth in space,
thus beginning the Space Age. Robert
Leskovec, former chief engineer at
WCLV, and Ed Miller, who ran WCLV's
Catholic Broadcasting subchannel
back in the early 60s, furnished WCLV
with a recording of Sputnik's radio
signal recorded by the St. Joseph High
School Radio Club in 1957. Jacqueline Gerber played it on the air and then threw a
WCLV Sputnik Party. Here some of the revelers gather around the Sputnik themed refreshments. (l to r) Account Executive Dan Kelly, intern Lorraine Delaney, Jackie Gerber and Production Manager Jim Mehrling. Few people admitted they were old enough to remember sputnik.
Here is the repast and center piece that
Jacqueline Gerber prepared for the WCLV
Sputnik Anniversary Party. The center
piece is made up of kohlrabi,
representing sputniks, potatoes
representing asteroids, starfruit
slices representing, what else, stars,
all on a bed of flowering kale.
The larger cake plate has sugar
cookies in the shapes of sputniks
and shooting stars. The smaller cake
plate has a glazed almond bundt cake that has no connection to sputnik or outer space – it’s just a recipe Jackie likes. Tang, which, of course, was developed for astronauts,
is in the pitcher. |
