THE WCLV NON-SIGNOFF SIGNOFF

Prior to 1982, WCLV did not operate
24 hours day. We signed off at Midnight
or 1:00 AM. But we did it with a nightly
ritual that many listeners of that time still
recall. We would begin with the coda of
the Howard Hanson Symphony No. 2,
introduce a poem, from recordings or
read live by the announcer or a local poet.
Then it was to the beginning of the
second movement of the Hanson Symphony,
over which we read the offical signoff,
concluding with a quiet piece of music.

This procedure would sometimes take up to 15 minutes. This esablished the Hanson
Symphony No. 2 as our offical music logo, which we still used occasionally through the years,
and which we have resurrected for the many 50th Anniversary features we're presenting. And
we're pleased to tell you that the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra under James Feddeck
will perform the entire symphony as part of their Sunday, November 11th concert.
With the advent of 24 hour operation, the signoff ritual disappeared. However, a number of those who have made 50th Anniversary Comments mentioned the signoffs, and so as part of our observance we are re-creating tihis nostalgic item from WCLV's past. These non-signoffs begin on Monday, September 17th, at the conclusion of the Late Program, just prior to WCLV All Night and will continue once a week through November on a rotation of each weeknight.
