WCLV AND OMEA HIGH SCHOOL ALL-STARS for 2012

 

WCLV and the Ohio Music Education Association are pleased to salute the following
high school students in Districts IV and VII who have been recognized for excellence
in music.  Each student receives a certificate and is acknowledged in on-air salutes
over WCLV. ,

 

Aurora Bye plays the horn at Berea High School, where she is a senior and Dan Barth is the Director.
 
Seniors Katie Jackson, Avriel Ralys and Karen Zoeller are all members of a winning clarinet trio at West Geauga High School, where Jason Branch is the Band Director.
 
Nicole Koballa is a junior at Beaumont High School.  She won an award for her trumpet playing thanks to Director Dr. Lisa Pierce Litteral.
 
An award-winning percussionist representing Cleveland Heights High School is junior snare drummer Gordon Gustafson.  Daniel Heim and Brett Baker are the Co-Directors at Heights High.
 
At Perry High School, Jeff Fabis is also a junior.  His number one rating came in the also saxophone category

Nate Densmore’s baritone voice garnered a one rating this year.  He’s a senior at Perry High School, where Beth Singer directs vocal activities.
 
Soprano Taylor Fuge also received a one.  She sings at Firelands High School.  Wendy Johnson is the one in charge of student voices at Firelands.
 
A prize-winner at Brush High School is mezzo-soprano Sarah Straub.  Michael Campbell directs the vocal program there.
 
Bass Matthew Stewart took a number one rating back to Madison High School, where Nicole Groah is the director.
 
Jack DeBaltzo is another bass.  He’s a senior and sings for Lakewood High School, where Dr. Lisa Hanson directs the choir.

Rebecca and Sara Friedberg are both juniors at Cleveland Heights High School.  Rebecca plays the violin and Sara the viola for the Heights co-directors, Daniel Heim and Brett Baker.
 
Maureen Driscoll is a junior violinist at Mentor High School.  Beth Klayman has charge of the string program there.
 
Linnea Stolze has the distinction of two number one ratings for both violin and trumpet.  The junior at Avon Lake High School plays in ensembles directed by David Eddleman.
 
At North Ridgeville High School, violinist Laurel Kennett is a senior in the music program directed by William E. Davis III.  She is another dual award winner – she also received a number one rating for her alto voice.
 
A number one rating goes to the lower end of the string section, personified by bassist David Nainiger, whose orchestra director at Bay High School is Darren Allen.
  
Clarinetist Lauren Fischer is a student of Darren Allen at Bay High School, where she is a junior.
 
Oboist Celine Gielink is the one to whom the entire orchestra tunes.  She’s also a junior and performs at Chagrin Falls High School.  Kathy Schoenfelt is the director there.
 
You can find flutist Megan Doherty in the halls of Olmsted Falls High School.  Timothy K. Strelau is in charge of things musical.
 
The alto saxophone is the chosen instrument for junior Zach Kapuszka at Riverside High School.  Davis Schwartz is his director.
 
Maurell James is a flutist at West Geauga High School and Jason Branch is the Band Director there.
 
Junior Ellie Faile is a piano student of Devon Gess at Bay High School.
 
Maria Pasternak is also a juniorShe’s a pianist at Riverside High School, where David Schwartz is in charge of music.
 
At Euclid High School, Annemarie Kulbis is a senior.  Her piano playing comes under the watchful eye of Diane Tizzano.
 
Junior Any Zhao is another of those high school students whose talents manifest themselves on two instruments.  In her case, she won awards on both piano and flute. Dr. Lisa Pierce Litteral is in charge of music at Beaumont School.

Megan Jones is a soprano who’s a junior at Beaumont School where Dr. Lisa Pierce Litteral directs the choir.
 
McKensie Kilbane is also a soprano and also a junior.  She’s at Bay High School, where Devon Gess works with the singers.
 
At Andrews Osborne Academy, the voice range of junior Emily Zart is mezzo-soprano.  Karen Clark is in charge of vocal activities there.
 
Avon Lake High School has its share of singers as well, including soprano Julie Bastulli, a senior.  William G. Zurkey is the director.
 
Midview Express is a vocal chamber ensemble at Midview High School.  The group received a superior rating thanks to training by choral director Lisa Manning.
 
 
Three wind players from Avon Lake High School begin our listing - flutist Erin Umek is a senior, clarinetist Julia Sant is a Junior and junior Shannon Hickey has the bass clarinet in hand at Avon Lake, where David Eddleman has charge of the instrumentalists. 
 
The clarinet is the instrument chosen by Katelyn Edgehouse.  Katelyn is a junior at
Olmsted Falls High School.  Timothy K. Strelau is the band director.
 

West Geauga High School has two students who each received a double superior rating this year:  Marci Samblero’s awards were for being part of a saxophone quintet and a playing tenor saxophone solo.  Christian Watson also was part of the saxophone quintet and also received an award for a bassoon solo.  They’re both senior students of Band Director Jason Branch.

Soprano Grace Gamble of Beaumont School gathered in a superior rating for her efforts, with the encouragement of Beaumont’s vocal director, Dr. Lisa Pierce Litteral.
 
Samantha Jackson is also a soprano and also a junior.  She’s at Andrews Osborne Academy, where Karen Clark is the choral director.
 
Alto Melanie d’Angelo, on the other hand, is a senior at Avon Lake High School.  William G. Zurkey is in charge of the young voices there.
 
And we have two lower male voices in this group as well.  Baritone Jonathan Myers and bass J. D. Myers are both from Midview High School,and both received superior ratings this year.  Lisa Manning is the Midview Choral Director.

 

Soprano Angela Benvenuto is a senior at Eastlake North High School and a student of Michael Carney.
 
Junior Meena Mihalski is also a soprano.  She attends North Ridgeville High School.  William E. Davis III is the choral director.
 
Two altos who are both seniors at Lakewood High School are next on our list – Brianna Kaviak and Annalisa Perez are their names.  Dr. Lisa Hanson leads the Lakewood vocal program.
 
And we have a tenor on this listing as well – he’s Tyler Levicki, and he attends Madison High School, where he’s a junior.  Nicole Groah is his chorus director there.

Senior Matt Kilgore’s superior rating was earned for his snare drum performanceIt’s what he does regularly at Avon Lake High School  David Eddleman directs the instrumental music program at Avon Lake.
 
Peter Huston is also a superior-rated percussionist.  Brad Hruska is his band director at Perry High School.
 
There are two senior percussionists at Brush High School who received superior ratings. Michael Blackwell plays the xylophone while Maurice Lewis is a snare drummer.  Kaylee Flynt leads the instrumentalists at Brush.
 
And Cleveland Heights High School is also home to a pair of prize-winning percussionists – melodic percussion is the persuasion for seniors Joe Mullen and Kevin Smith.  The Co-directors of the Cleveland Heights program are Daniel Heim and Bret Baker.

Junior Xavier Martinez and senior Doug Lee share the same voice range – baritone – and the same schoolAndrews Osborne Academy, where Karen Clark is the vocal director.
 
Brianna Bunt and Christie Budweg are both sopranos.  They are members of the junior class at Firelands High School, where they work with director Wendy Johnson.
 
Avon Lake High School has a large number of vocalists with well-earned superior ratings, including soprano Mikhaila Rice and alto Paige Higgins.  They are both juniors, as is bass Nathan Rish, also from Avon Lake.  William G. Zurkey is the director there.
Two senior singers from Eastlake North High School give us opposite ends of the vocal spectrum.  Hannah Reinhard is a soprano and Joey Vahcic is a bass.  At Eastlake North, Michael Carney is the vocal leader.
 
Speaking of basses, junior Derek Berger also received a superior rating – he’s at North Ridgeville High School, where William E. Davis III directs.
 
Two seniors at Madison High School who are sopranos are Cassandra Kahr and Angelina Huber.  Nicole Groah is their choral director.
 
And from Lakewood High School, we’ll congratulate a junior tenor, Luke Lemmeier and his vocal director, Dr. Lisa Hanson.

Madison High School has produced not one but three award-winning alto saxophonists, senior Julia Kuhlman and juniors Erika Nalow and Jillian Wallace.  The work of supporting an entire band or orchestra is the responsibility of the lowest instrumental voice, the tuba.   And at Madison, that’s the job of senior Ben Green.  Kristy May directs Madison’s instrumental program.

Mentor High School cellist Heather Bosau is a junior in the program led by Beth Klayman.
 
Another member of the string section is violinist Stephanie Pierzynski.  She’s a junior.  Flutist Michelle Penko is a senior.  They’re both involved in the music program directed by Dr. Lisa Pierce Litteral at Beaumont School.
 
Two seniors from Perry High School make up our trumpet section – they are Heather de Haas and Kristen Morse.  At Perry High School, Brad Hruska is the music director.
 
In the horn chair, we have junior Trevor Coble from Cleveland Heights High School.  Heights has a music program led by co-directors Daniel Heim and Brett Baker.
 
Two senior vocalists at Beaumont School deserve recognition for their superior ratings – soprano Gabriela Leskur and mezzo-soprano Courtney Jones.  Their vocal instructor, Dr. Lisa Pierce Litteral, also merits a special mention.
 
Another pair of sopranos who earned superior ratings can be found at Lakewood High School.  They are junior Rachel Guetling and senior Amber Rush-Jones.  Lakewood is also home to baritone William Crosby, a junior.  Dr. Lisa Hanson is the vocal director at Lakewood.
 
And rounding out our vocal ensemble is a group from Avon Lake High School – soprano Dora Lukacevic, a junior, baritones Eric Moenich and Zac Strimbu, both seniors, and bass Tyler Robertson, also a senior.  William G. Zurkey is Avon‘s choral director. 
 
Bradley Stricklen is the trombonist in our quintet.  He’s a junior at Olmsted Falls High School and Timothy K. Strelau is the director.
 
And to complete this quintet of bass players, we have tubist Nathan Shook, a junior from Riverside High School, where David Schwartz is the leader.
 
 Avon Lake High School has many fine singers in its student body.  Two of them who are juniors and sing soprano are Carly Mathewson and Cassie Tenorio.  William G. Zurkey is in charge of the vocal program. 
 
Another school well-represented in the vocal department in Eastlake North.  Three of their altos recently received superior ratings – juniors Hannah Fisher and Nichole McCrory and senior Kellie Sonntag.  Applause is certainly due their director, Michael Carney.
 
And we’ll acknowledge the efforts of two tenors from North Ridgeville High School, junior Ed Bahle and senior David Stella.  William E. Davis III is in charge of things choral at the school.
 
Soprano Sydne Nielsen is a junior at Madison High School, where Nicole Groah is the choral director.
 
Grace Lazos is also a soprano who is a junior – in her case =-at Lakewood High School, where she works with Dr. Lisa Hanson.
 
Stephanie Nagel, on the other hand, is a senior soprano.  She’s at Eastlake North High School.  Michael Carney directs the choruses at Eastlake.
 
We meet anothersenior soprano, Kim Critchley, at North Ridgeville High School.  William E. Davis III is her choral director.
 
We have two senior sopranos at Avon Lake High School – Claire Green and Erin Umek.  It’s William G. Zurkey who organizes the choral efforts at Avon Lake.

We recognize two string players from Bay High School, violinists Ashley DeYong and Jackson Brothers, both of whom are juniors.  Darren Allen has charge of the instrumental program at Bay High.
 
The wind section at Avon Lake High School includes junior trumpeter Alex Riley and alto saxophonist Rachel VanScyoc, also a junior, both of whom recently received superior ratings.  David Eddleman leads the winds at Avon Lake.
 
And we’ll salute three seniors at Cleveland Heights High School – violinist Kelsey Ferguson, horn player Colin Higgs and tenor saxophonist William Walters, along with their co-band directors, Daniel Heim and Brett Baker.

Junior Kevin Thompson was awarded a superior rating for his piano playing, in evidence at Olmsted Falls High School, where Timothy K. Strelau is the band director.
 
The trombone section at Avon Lake High School includes two juniors, Cassie Tenorio and Nathan Rish.  David Eddleman supervises their musical efforts.
